Tetris Didn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category Could Fix That

As any major honors show draws close, there’s always an outcry for introducing of new categories to acknowledge overlooked contributions and fill the hearts of followers with niche passions.

My colleague previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. The same goes for tabletop games, representing someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification backing this proposal stands as crucial and significant. The demand is this: There should be an award type for logic-based games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Classifying creative works is not a science; it remains highly personal, and typically start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why cinema institutions avoid this approach. However, it represents a necessary evil in the world of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify one unified medium.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Leading game ceremonies currently feature classifications covering Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these classifications successfully include numerous genres, allowing placement for numerous titles.

This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Consider three of this year’s best games, each quite distinct: structural challenges in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.

Acknowledgment Issues

Many instances occur outstanding logic titles launched regularly lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit award groups including Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging independent game categories.

  • An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition in any category in 2014
  • Another creative title missed out during that ceremony
  • Well-received sorting experience was overlooked that year
  • Only a few brain-teasers managed to sneak into niche award types

Value of Brain-Teasers

Frequently they represent small games, but the art in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as most engaged experiences worldwide and have been for many years.

The iconic tile-matching title challenges well-known building titles competing to become best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.

Proposal and Rationale

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. One could readily select five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.

To emphasize again, these represent titles without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers are working at the hard edge game development, developing some of essential manifestations of the video game form. Just like movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait decades.
